Live Scan is the method, not the requirement. It means your fingerprints are captured electronically on a certified scanner and transmitted straight to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, rather than rolled in ink and mailed. Almost every Florida agency that screens applicants now expects submissions this way, which is why “go get Live Scan” has become shorthand for the whole process.
What the phrase leaves out is the part that actually determines whether it works: routing. Your results go to whichever agency owns the ORI number your submission is filed under, and that number comes from whoever asked you to be screened. Bring it and everything lands where it should. Arrive without it, or with the wrong one, and the submission goes somewhere nobody is looking — which is the single most common reason people pay to be fingerprinted twice.

People use these two terms as if they were interchangeable and they aren't. Live Scan describes the capture technology — electronic, no ink, transmitted digitally. Level 2 describes the depth of the background check itself: fingerprint-based, covering Florida records through FDLE and national records through the FBI. You get a Level 2 screening by means of a Live Scan capture.
The distinction matters when you're reading a requirement. A form asking for “Live Scan” is telling you the method and assuming you know the rest. A form asking for “Level 2” is telling you the standard and leaving the method to you. Either way you end up in the same chair — but if your form specifies an agency or a statute, that detail decides which ORI we file under, so bring the whole page rather than the one line.
Without the right ORI your results have nowhere to go, and routing cannot be corrected after submission.

The screening that follows is the same either way — what changes is that electronic capture checks image quality before submission, so it is far less likely to come back rejected.

Fingerprinting costs vary a great deal from state to state, so a figure you have seen quoted elsewhere will not apply in Florida.

A valid government photo ID and your ORI number. A driver's licence is ideal because our reader pulls your details straight off the barcode, which speeds up intake and removes typing errors on your name or date of birth.
It identifies the agency that requested your screening and routes your results to them. Your employer, licensing board, or application packet will have it. If you can't find it, call before you set out from Palm Beach County and we'll usually locate it.
FDLE typically returns results to the requesting agency within a few business days. Results go to the agency rather than to you — that's how the statute is written, so follow up with them rather than with us.
