What the phrase leaves out is the part that actually determines whether it works: routing. Arrive without it, or with the wrong one, and the submission goes somewhere nobody is looking — which is the single most common reason people pay to be fingerprinted twice.

People use these two terms as if they were interchangeable and they aren't. Live Scan describes the capture technology — electronic, no ink, transmitted digitally. Level 2 describes the depth of the background check itself: fingerprint-based, covering Florida records through FDLE and national records through the FBI. You get a Level 2 screening by means of a Live Scan capture.
The distinction matters when you're reading a requirement. A form asking for “Live Scan” is telling you the method and assuming you know the rest. A form asking for “Level 2” is telling you the standard and leaving the method to you. Either way you end up in the same chair — but if your form specifies an agency or a statute, that detail decides which ORI we file under, so bring the whole page rather than the one line.
Most agencies want a result issued within the last six to twelve months. Old is treated the same as none.
Without the right ORI your results have nowhere to go, and routing cannot be corrected after submission.
A name-based search will not satisfy a fingerprint-based requirement, however recently it was run.
Some agencies want the application on file first so results have a record to attach to.
The capture itself is the quick part — roughly ten minutes at the scanner, a little longer when a photo or a printed card is involved. Electronic submissions leave our office the same day, so nothing sits waiting on a courier or a weekly batch run.
What happens after that is the agency's clock, not ours. State and federal processing typically returns a result within a few business days, and posting to a board or to the Clearinghouse follows from there. Usually. Cuts, calluses, and worn ridges make capture harder but rarely impossible — we work through it carefully rather than rushing. If ridge detail is genuinely insufficient there are documented alternative procedures, and we'll explain them.
We transmit your submission and do not retain a personal fingerprint database. Retention on the state and federal side is governed by their own rules, not by us.

Level 2 screening applies to adults in positions of trust. Fingerprinting of minors happens in other contexts, such as some adoption processes, and we handle those with a parent or guardian present.
